Brandon Valley narrowly notched their seventh Eastern South Dakota Conference win Saturday night by fending off Yankton in the 55-53 league win.

“It was a good to come out of this game with the win,” said Lynx head coach Mark Stadem, whose team improves to 7-4 overall. “We are working hard at becoming more consistent on both ends of the floor. Yankton has played good basketball lately, and they made a good run at us at the end, but the girls found a way to win.”

While the Lynx led at all four quarter stops, the Gazelles were more fluent in executing their offense in the second half to get within four points of the Lynx by the end of the third quarter, 38-34.

Yankton wasn’t easily dismissed and they even had an opportunity to set up a potential game-tying possession at the end of the regulation.

The Lady Lynx’s 55 points were fueled by eight three-pointers. Kate Swenson led the Brandon Valley girls with 13 points, while Jessi Peterson and Laura Hieb each netted a dozen. Peterson and Hieb combined for seven of the team’s eight three-pointers in the win.

The Lynx turned in a 48 percent field goal effort, 20-42, while Yankton hit on 18-53 (33 percent). Brandon Valley’s inconsistency at the free throw line continued in this game, as the Lynx made 7-16. The Gazelles were near perfect, connecting on 10-of-11.

For Yankton, Chloe Cornemann scored a game-high 15 points and Emily Anderson had 14 points. Mikala Hora and Laura Ekeren each scored nine points.

Yankton had the edge on the boards, 31-24. Swenson clamped on to eight and Heidi Hoff had seven. Yankton’s Christine Broders posted seven rebounds.

Hoff provided nine of the Brandon Valley’s 13 total assists.

The Lynx turned the ball over 13 times to Yankton’s 11.

Brandon Valley continues their ESD schedule on Friday at Aberdeen Central and on Saturday, they host the Watertown Arrows. Next Tuesday, the Lynx play at Mitchell.
