Sioux Falls woman documents family history in book

February 09. 2010 6:00AM
We are all curious, from time to time, of where we come from. Often times it starts with our names and how we got that name.

Joanne (Jody) Swenson, of Sioux Falls, along with her son Steve Swenson, of Sioux Falls took their curiosities one step farther, and put together a hardbound anthology of the confirmation, validation and narrative of their existence. Spanning some 20 years of analyzing and studying the Dedrick family heritage has been recorded in a manner that a book is ready to be printed and bound.

On Jan. 21, Joe, Ted, Steve and Matt Swenson set out dressed to please, and with roses in hand their next stop was Waterford All Saints. Al Adrian of Stellar Limousine, Sioux Falls, picked the four Swenson brothers up and then took them to get their mother, Jody.

Jody said she so surprised as she answered the door and was greeted by her wonderful assembly of young men she declares as her sons, who were ready to take her on an excursion. It was time to relinquish the manuscript to the printers, and put the finishing touch on the 20-year project and start the final phase of her publication. The Swenson boys brought their mother to Sanders Printing in Garretson, the same company that printed the Swenson Family journal Jody finished a few years prior.

Jody said, “This project was very satisfying, I was able to use at lot of personal reflection in the book because of my parents.” Jody gained an account of the certainty and circumstance from her parents, which offered her a great place to start.
Steve and Jody delineated the family history back to the Roman Emperor Charlemagne 742 -814 AD to the present day, “Captain 11” (Dave Dedrick), as he is Jody’s brother. There will be many priceless documents archived in this book. Jody’s family came to America by boat in 1660, 40 years after the pilgrims had settled. The family purchased land from the Native Americans and settled south of Albany N.Y.
Encased in the book will be a copy of the original contract between Jody’s ancestors and the Native Americans for the purchase of the original U.S. homestead including the price they paid to own that land.

Once the manuscript was safe in the hands of the staff of Sanders Printing, the Swenson’s ventured across the street to Annie’s Coffeehouse for some lunch before the luxurious limousine ride home. Lunch was set off in a private area and the restaurant’s owner, Annie, had a table reserved with the words, “Welcome the famous author.”

Jody said she was pleased with the all the special treatment and was very excited to get her masterpiece to the printers but she was far more excited about starting an icy, dreary, Thursday morning with her pride and joy – all four of them.

“Everyday I get to see my boys is a great way to spend a day,” she said.
