Brandon Valley could’ve taken the easy path to the State Class AA tournament. But instead, Sioux Falls Lincoln will take that journey, as they defeated the host Lynx 44-38 Friday in the District 2AA title game.
“Sometimes closing a game is difficult thing,” said Lynx head coach Brent Deckert. “After a rough first half the guys came out and played an outstanding third quarter, but just didn't have enough juice to finish it.”
But starting a game can be difficult too.
For the first five minutes of Friday’s contest, the Lynx and Patriots traded possessions only to come up scoreless. Lincoln’s Trey Naasz finally broke the ice when he hit pay dirt from beyond the arc with 3:04 to play in the quarter. With 30 seconds to go, the Lynx finally got on the board on a Tyler Trevino basket for the 2-7 game. With two ticks on the clock, the Lynx took advantage of a Lincoln turnover when Bryan Brown hit from 3-point territory to close out the 5-7 quarter.
Lincoln opened the second quarter with a quick 3-point shot from Tom Mettler to pad their lead to five, 5-10. The Patriots maintained that edge through most of the second quarter until 1:48 when Brandon Valley’s Brock Wickett hit from beyond the arc, narrowing the gap to three, 17-20. At the half, Lincoln had the four-point advantage, 17-22.
The Lynx outscored Lincoln 14-6 in the third quarter. Fueled by seven of Austin Sumner’s team-high 10 points, the Lynx took the lead with 6:54 on the clock. Sumner hit the shot and the ensuing free throw to take the 23-22 lead. Brown closed out the quarter with a last-second layup to take a 32-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
That’s when Lincoln made its move. Naasz opened the quarter with two consecutive baskets to tie the game at 32-32. Lincoln took the lead for good when Greg Harner scored an off-balance layup with 3:37 to play.
Trevino hit two free throws with 2:25 left to make it 38-37 Lincoln, but Patriots guard Jon Gednalske responded with a layup high off the glass. Naasz scored inside again after a Brandon Valley missed shot to make it 42-37 with 1:13 left. Patriots center Will Hieber iced it with a layup with 19 seconds left, and that would be the last of the scoring for either team.
“We always expect to be a great rebounding and defensive team but we can't expect to win only scoring 38 points. We made some plays in the fourth quarter but just didn't make enough of them,” Deckert said. “We had a couple plays defensively where we didn't get everyone covered and Sioux Falls Lincoln got some easy baskets. Those hoops feel like 10 points in the post season.”
Brandon Valley turned in a 31 percent effort from the floor, 13-42, and were 9-for-12 at the line (75 percent). In addition to Sumner’s 10 points, Trevino scored seven and Brown and Ben Schultz each added six. Derek Fischer accounted for four points.
Lincoln, who shot 50 percent from the field (18-36) made 5-9 free throws.
The Lynx had a slight edge on the bords, 21-18. Sumner hauled in 10; Schultz and Fischer each had four. For Lincoln, Naasz grabbed eight.
Brandon Valley turned the ball over 14 times to Lincoln’s 12.
Despite the postseason loss, the Lynx will live to play another day.
The Lynx were scheduled to host Watertown Tuesday night in the Region 1AA title game.
“The good news is we still have some life left. It's still a race to win two before we lose two,” Deckert said.
The winner of that game advances to the March 18-20 State Class AA tournament in Rapid City.
