Brandon Valley did nearly everything they needed to in Monday’s District 2AA opener at Sioux Falls Lincoln.

The Lynx girls shot 79 percent from the free throw line.

They limited the Patriots to just five offensive rebounds.

And they shut down the Lincoln girls from scoring beyond the arc.

What they didn’t do was shoot well enough to sideline the Patriots – who poured in 23 points from the charity stripe – in the 53-43 post-season loss.

“We did what we needed to do, but we just didn’t shoot well enough,” summed up Lynx head coach Mark Stadem. “The effort was there and I’m proud of the girls for that.”

The Lynx were the dominate force in the first quarter, holding Lincoln scoreless through the first five minutes en route to an 8-5 lead at the end of the first stanza.
After posting a 15-9 lead early in the second quarter, Lincoln turned the tide with defensive pressure and hustle points, knotting the game at 15-15 with 2:45 to play. Freshman Darby Hugunin scored off an offensive rebound to help fuel a 10-0 run that put the Pats up 19-15 after four consecutive points by Elise Maresh.

The Lynx pulled within 19-18 at halftime when Jessi Peterson rattled in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The junior guard also hit two free throws to help Brandon Valley pull even at 25-25 with 4:25 left in the third before Lincoln reeled off eight points for the 33-25 advantage.
Entering the fourth quarter with a 33-25 lead, Lincoln tightened its defense to limit scoring chances for the Lynx, who shot just 17 percent from the field in the second half.

Brandon Valley pulled within 47-41 on two Claire Choudek free throws with 1:19 remaining. But Carley Chambers and Hugunin shot a combined 15-for-20 from the charity stripe to help seal the victory.

Peterson and Heidi Hoff both scored 10 points for the Lynx; Laura Hieb added nine and Claire Choudek accounted for five.

Brandon Valley shot 22 percent from the field, 12-53, and turned in an impressive effort at the line, 15-19 (79 percent).

Hugunin led the Patriot offense with 19 points, while Maresh posted 17 points and Chambers added 10 apiece. Lincoln shot 35 percent from the field and picked up 23 points at the charity stripe out of their 31 opportunities.

Eleven turnovers plagued the Lynx; the Patriots had 10 in the game.

The Lynx had the advantage on the boards, 34-28. Kate Swenson hauled in nine and Choudek hauled in seven. Hoff, Peterson and Allison Koehn all had five. For Lincoln, Maresh was credited with a dozen boards.

Hoff dished out three of Brandon Valley’s nine assists; Lincoln had one. The Patriots had the advantage in the steals department, nabbing 10 to Brandon Valley’s seven.
