Maassen to play softball at Northwestern
Lexy Maassen of Brandon, has signed a letter of intent to continue her softball career at Northwestern College next year.
Maassen is a 5’7” third-baseman who played for the Brandon Valley Speed club team. She batted .416 with six doubles and three triples and guided the Speed to a third place finish at the state tournament. Maassen also stole 16 bases and has played on three teams that won the ASA state championship. She has also played and qualified in the ASA National Tournament and Hall-of-Fame Tournament in 2009. A multi-sports athlete who earned eight additional letters for Brandon Valley, Maassen is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to major in physical therapy or education at Northwestern.
“Lexy brings a lot to our team,” commented head coach Stephanie Kuhl. “She is very quick and a versitile player. We will be working her in the middle infield and with her speed from the left side of the plate will be very helpful offensively.”

Senior guard Katie Farley, a 2006 Brandon Valley grad, was named GPAC honorable mention. Farley provided shutdown, aggressive defense all season from her guard spot. She was credited with 31 steals and averaged 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 points per game.
Also garnering All-GPAC honors was Betsy Hildreth (Norwalk, Iowa), who was the only Cougar selected to GPAC’s first team, and Holli Aggen (Worthington, Minn.), an honorable mention pick.

SDHSAA adds soccer as sanctioned sport
South Dakota high schools received the go-ahead today to add soccer as a sanctioned sport for boys and girls starting in fall 2012.
The High School Activities Association board voted 8-0 to accept a report on how to implement the sport, and 5-3 on adding it beginning in the 2012-13 school year.
South Dakota is the last state to add soccer, although there are a number of high school club teams that pay their own expenses.
Some schools are reluctant to have soccer teams because of the added costs. The local school board will have the final decision on whether to offer it.
