Valley Springs Post 131 competed in the July 16-18 Mid-Summer Classic tournament held at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls looking to gain some momentum for upcoming regional play.
Valley Springs 2, Watertown 16
In the first game Valley was matched up against Watertown in a game where the offense and defense both struggled for Post 131. Watertown scored two runs in the top of the first but broke the game open in the third scoring six runs on six hits and two Valley Spring errors.
Post 131 could get no offense going in their half of the third and Watertown added three unearned runs on two hits and two errors to push the score to 11-0.
Valley finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning but Watertown put up six more runs in the sixth inning to complete a 17-2 rout of Post 131.
Kent Ode, Corbin Kavanaugh and Matt Larson picked up the only hits for Valley while Kavanaugh, Seth Rockafellow and Dylan Niklason handled the pitching.
Valley Springs 2, New Ulm 13
New Ulm took the field against Valley Springs in game two and quickly jumped on top picking up three runs on one hit and a Valley error.
The Post 131 offense continued to sputter going three up and three down in each of the first three innings while New Ulm tacked on a run in the second and another in the third on just one hit, a walk, a hit batter, and two more Valley Springs miscues.
Trailing 5-0, it looked like the Post 131 offense might finally get on track in the fourth inning getting back-to-back singles with one out but failed to push any runs across.
New Ulm responded in the fifth inning and put the game out of reach scoring eight runs on four hits, five walks and one error. Valley Springs put together four consecutive hits in their half of the inning to score two runs but it was too little too late as New Ulm claimed the 13-2 victory.
Post 131 tallied six hits in the game with Derek Fischer, Jordan Simon and Ode doing the pitching.
Valley Springs 0, S.F. West 11
Sioux Falls West was up next for Post 131 but poor hitting and defense continued to plaque the team.
West put up three runs in the top of the first on one hit, two walks and two errors while Valley went scoreless in their half of the inning.
The trend continued through the fifth inning with West scoring three runs in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 10-0 after five. Valley Springs held West scoreless in the sixth inning but still couldn’t get anything going on offense. West scored again in the seventh and held Valley to take the 11-0 win.
Post 131 managed just three hits in the game while giving up nine errors.
Valley Springs 0, Fargo 10
The final game of the tournament found Valley Springs Post 131 taking on Fargo, N.D. The defense improved for Valley playing errorless baseball but the offense was all in Fargo’s favor.
With a 1-0 lead after one inning of play, a grand slam homerun keyed a five-run second inning, giving Fargo a 6-0 lead.
Valley Springs pitcher Kent Ode tried to get things going in the top of the third stroking a one-out double, but the inning ended with Ode still on second.
Fargo picked up where they left off scoring four more runs in the third inning and picked up the 10-0 win in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings by the 10-run rule.
