Jarrod Johnson, South Dakota’s Commissioner of School and Public Lands, was elected president-elect of the Western States Land Commissioners Association (WSLCA) at the organization’s summer meeting recently. The Association is comprised of state trust land administrators from 23 states. Johnson will begin his term as president in July 2011, during which time he will serve as the primary liaison between state trust land offices and the federal government.

WSLCA member states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Together, the WSLCA manage 447 million surface acres, mineral right properties, and permanent school land trust funds. The Association meets twice a year to share and exchange information, hear from experts in relevant areas of public land management, and further the established objectives set in 1949 when the Association was founded.

Johnson lives near Corson, with his wife Heidi and their two children. He was elected Commissioner of School and Public Lands in 2006 and is running for re-election this year.
